Upcoming TLDs / .etc

Can you register a .etc domain?

Not yet: applied for
The short answer
Not yet. .etc is not in the DNS root, so no registrar can sell a .etc domain today. It is one of 986 strings applied for in ICANN's 2026 new gTLD round, published October 7, 2026. 5 applicants want it (Link Freedom Group / LFG, Pirin Tablet, LLC and 3 others), and only one can run it.

What .etc would mean

In their own words, from the public part of each application (question 118):

short for et cetera

Link Freedom Group / LFG

Etc commonly refers to a broadly recognized term used across a wide range of contexts.

Pirin Tablet, LLC

"Etc" is the abbreviation of the Latin phrase "et cetera," meaning "and the rest" or "and so on," used to indicate that a list continues with further similar items.

Radix Technologies Inc SEZC

ETC- means "and the rest," "and so forth"; it signals that a list includes not only the items named but others that may be inferred. In English use since 1418.

TLD1 LLC

ETC is an abbreviation of the Latin et cetera, meaning “and the rest” or “and other things of the same kind.” It follows a list to show that more could be included without naming every last one. You get the idea.

XYZ.COM LLC

When will .etc be available?

ICANN has not set a date. The final list of applied-for strings comes on String Confirmation Day (November 17, 2026), community input and objections run until March 16, 2027, and ICANN processes applications after a prioritization draw in 2027. Registration opens only after ICANN delegates .etc and its registry announces launch dates.
