Mod' is a common English word and abbreviation with several literal meanings, including a shortened form of 'modern' or 'modification,' and a shortened form of 'moderate.' It also serves as a root in words such as 'modular,' 'model,' and 'modernize.'
"Mod" is an English noun and verb, a shortening of "modification," meaning an alteration made to something, particularly a user-made change to software, a game or a vehicle. As a shortening of "modern" it also names a British subculture.

The gTLD is not dependent on a single industry, technology, or business model and can accommodate evolving uses as technology and Internet activity develop.

When will .mod be available?
ICANN has not set a date. The final list of applied-for strings comes on String Confirmation Day (November 17, 2026), community input and objections run until March 16, 2027, and ICANN processes applications after a prioritization draw in 2027. Registration opens only after ICANN delegates .mod and its registry announces launch dates.
