OFFICIAL is a status signal for a product, service or content, assigned to those who claim it.
A suffix added to social media handles to mark it as a primary or authentic personal presence, distinguishing it from fan pages or parody accounts; relating to an authority or a body and its duties, actions, and responsibilities
The string is a common English word with broad online use. It often forms part of social media usernames for public-facing accounts, pages or websites. The applied-for gTLD makes this familiar online naming convention available for domain names.

"Official" is an English word meaning authorized by or coming from the person or organization concerned, as distinct from unauthorized or unaffiliated; also used to describe something formal or approved.
Official commonly refers to something identified or designated as approved, recognized, or authoritative by the relevant person or entity.
“Official” means authorised by, or emanating from, a proper authority, and recognised as authentic or endorsed by the person or organisation concerned. Used here as an open naming convention for a genuine, primary online presence.
OFFICIAL means formally issued, recognized or connected to a position of authority. As a noun, it is a person who holds such a position. By definition, not unofficial.

When will .official be available?
ICANN has not set a date. The final list of applied-for strings comes on String Confirmation Day (November 17, 2026), community input and objections run until March 16, 2027, and ICANN processes applications after a prioritization draw in 2027. Registration opens only after ICANN delegates .official and its registry announces launch dates.
