What .rem would mean
In their own words, from the public part of each application (question 118):
"REM" stands for "Registered Electronic Mail", a European standard for secure, certified electronic communications providing proof of delivery and sender authentication.
“rem” has no single literal meaning in English. For purposes of this application, the Applicant uses “rem” as a shortened form suggestive of “remembrance.”

The mission and purpose of the applied-for .rem gTLD are to provide a dedicated namespace for official electronic communications under the European REM standard. REM stands for “Registered Electronic Mail,” the European standard for secure, legally binding digital communications and the evolution of the Italian PEC system (Posta Elettronica Certificata). It provides verifiable proof of delivery, content integrity, and strong authentication of the sender’s identity.
