Is .taobao legit?

Legit
Is it legit?
Yes — .taobao is a legitimate top-level domain. It's a dot-brand registry (ICANN Spec 13), operated by Alibaba Group Holding Limited and live in the official IANA DNS root zone. Because it's reserved for the brand's own use, every .taobao address is controlled by the company itself — the public can't register one, and it can't be spun up by a third party.

Are .taobao sites safe?

.taobao sites are unusually safe: only Alibaba Group Holding Limited can create them, so a .taobao address can't be registered or impersonated by a scammer. Confirm you're on the official site as always, but the extension itself is locked down.

Who runs .taobao?

.taobao is operated by Alibaba Group Holding Limited, according to the IANA root database.

Can anyone register a .taobao domain?

No — .taobao is a closed brand registry reserved for Alibaba Group Holding Limited, so it isn't open to the public. A registrar search confirms the policy for any specific name.

Bottom line

.taobao is a genuine, ICANN-recognized extension — the question of whether a specific .taobao site is trustworthy comes down to the site, not the domain ending. See the full .taobao page for type, operator, and where to register one.
