.tech — should you use it?
Generic TLD · introduced 2015
The short answer
Says the quiet part loud. Fine for hardware brands and hackathons; watch the renewal-price ambush. Why it works
- Self-explanatory
- Big-name anchors (ces.tech, viacom.tech era marketing)
- First-year deals everywhere
Why it might not
- Steep renewal jump is the classic .tech trap
- Trying-too-hard vibes for software startups
The longer take
The intro-price-to-renewal spread on .tech is one of the worst in the industry — $4.99 in, $50 out. If you're building something durable, price year five, not year one.
Where to buy .tech
Renewal trap: .tech costs $6.99 in year one but $50.98/yr to renew — 7.3× the intro price. Budget for the renewal, not the promo. Full Renewal-Trap Index
