.dev — should you use it?

★★★★★  Generic TLD · introduced 2019

Best value in domains for anything developer-facing. Cheap, on-message, and HTTPS-enforced at the registry level.
Typical price
~$12–15/yr
Our rating
5/5
Since
2019
Why it works
  • Says exactly who it's for
  • On the HSTS preload list — HTTPS is mandatory, a real security floor
  • Cheap for what it signals
  • Run by Google Registry
Why it might not
  • Strictly developer-audience; wrong for consumer products
  • HTTPS-only can surprise misconfigured setups

The longer take

web.dev, kubernetes.dev, thousands of personal dev portfolios — the TLD arrived in 2019 already meaning something. For a developer tool, name.dev often beats name.io at a quarter of the price. The forced-HTTPS quirk is a feature: the whole TLD is preloaded, so browsers refuse plain HTTP.
